The Fort Lauderdale ACM SIGGRAPH Professional Chapter presents:

Paul Debevec Computer Graphics LuminaryPaul Debevec lecture and the SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival 2007 on HDCAM and UNCUT at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival

Paul Debevec is the associate director of graphics research at USC's Institute for Creative Technologies (USC ICT) and a research associate professor at USC's Department of Computer Science. His Ph. D thesis at UC Berkeley presented Facade, an image-based modeling and rendering system for creating photoreal virtual camera motion through architectural scenes from photographs. Using Facade he led the creation of photoreal animation of the Berkeley campus for his 1997 film "The Campanile Movie" whose techniques were later used to create virtual backgrounds for "The Matrix". He went on to demonstrate new image-based lighting techniques in his animation "Rendering with Natural Light", "Fiat Lux", and "The Parthenon".

He also led the design of HDR Shop, the first widely used high dynamic range image editing program. Paul recieved ACM SIGGRAPH's Significant New Researcher Award in 2001 and co-authored the book "High Dynamic Range Imaging" in 2005. Most recently , he chaired the SIGGRAPH 2007 Computer Animation Festival.

The SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival is the premier annual event for the world's most innovative, accomplished, and amazing digital film and video creators. An internationally recognized jury receives hundreds of submissions and presents the best work in the Electronic Theater. Selections include outstanding achievements in time-based art, scientific visualization, visual effects, real-time graphics, and narrative shorts. Since 1999, several works originally presented in the Computer Animation Festival have been nominated for or have received a "Best Animated Short" Academy Award.
