September 17th:7:00 P.M.: Fort Lauderdale ACM SIGGRAPH Professional Chapter Meeting: SIGGRAPH RAP UP at FAU's Center for Electronic Communications:
We will have another FREE meeting on September 17th at 7 PM. The presentation will be given by Leading Technologies, Incorporated who will discuss, Speeding up Product Design : Rapid Prototyping using 3D Computer Graphics.

The presentation will be followed up by the increasingly popular raffle
session where Leading Technologies is donating two grand prizes worth
$375 each in goods and services.

If you have gone to all the trouble to create a sophisticated computer
model then why not have a plastic prototype to impress your friends or
hold down paperwork. Now is your chance! Another prize is to scan in a
real life model ( or object I should say ), make a computer model from
that data AND get a plastic prototype. A nice way to give your pet rock
some company.

Of course, there will be consolation t-shirts and other items raffled
off as well.

Seriously, it is pretty amazing technology with very practical
applications in Industrial Design, architecture, and engineering. I
think game developers and anyone in visualization or simulation would
be interested in the process, too.

I hope to see you there,

August 13th:7:00 P.M.: Fort Lauderdale ACM SIGGRAPH Professional Chapter Meeting: SIGGRAPH RAP UP at FAU's Center for Electronic Communications:
SIGGRAPH2003 went very well from my experience. It was not too crowded, I saw that there was a great deal of recruiting from the major film studios and game companies.

For our first meeting ( which is FREE) , there will be a SIGGRAPH2003
rap-up this Wednesday evening, August 13th at 7 PM at the CEC Studios, 220 S.E. 2nd Avenue, downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Click CEC link up top for directions.

We have this year's SIGGRAPH2003 Electronic Theater for your
entertainment. We also brought back many t-shirts to raffle along with
other types of swag. We will also talk about future activity for your
Chapter and answer questions about the conference in San Diego.

I heard that I have failed to get the announcements out to many
interested students at the Art Institutes. My apologies. I will do my
best to fix this communication flaw.

I did not want to be contributing to the SPAM epidemic, so we set up
this announcement list on a voluntary basis. Unfortunately, I know I
lost some people who could not find the website. Please let anyone you
know interested in year-round ACM SIGGRAPH activity know about the
website and the announcement signup at the bottom of the page.

For this meeting I made up a flyer that can be downloaded at
fort-lauderdale.siggraph.org/flyer

If your school or workplace allows you, please print it and post it so
others will know that there is an active SIGGRAPH organization here.

at
FAU's Center for Electronic Communications:

Hosted by the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale
Registration begins at 9:30 or pre-register to reserve your seat: Call 954-525-5500 ext. 239

Character Animation using computers can be made easier with the knowledge of the principles of animation along with the guidance of good storyboarding. Two Computer Graphics artists from a famous blockbuster film production company are coming to Florida Atlantic University to present topics on classical animation fundamentals and their applications to computer generated character animation.

The admission is FREE to FAU students, faculty, and staff with large discounts to SIGGRAPH, IGDA, educators, and other college students with current I.D., only $10. All others are $25.

Wayne Gilbert, is a Senior Lead Animator with Industrial Light + Magic.
During the past six years he has worked on features films such as "E.T." (re-release), "Star Wars: Attack of The Clones", "The Mummy Returns", the PS2 game "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter" and numerous commercials. As an independent film maker he is completing a second computer-generated short film with two other story reels ready for production.

Mr. Gilbert's presentation will focus on Character Animation Principles from paper to computer. His new independent film, "Let Go", will also be screened and used as part of the Story Boarding session. Incidentally, the film was created entirely with Alias/Wavefront’s Maya 3D animation software.

His book "Simplified Drawing For Planning Animation" is based on curriculum developed while teaching in the Classical Animation Program at Sheridan College. His books will be also available to attendees at a discount.

Ron Bublitz is a Creature TD (Technical Director) with the ILM Creature Development Department. He has worked on "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones", "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter" and the upcoming" Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines". His presentation will focus on Character rigging for animation.

Demonstrations will be done using a character designed and rigged specifically for teaching character animation. The setup and use of constraints for a character's interaction in its environment and the rigging design method of the characters from "Let Go" will be the focus of Ron's presentation.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn from the masters in the feature film Industry!
